THE CANDLEJACK PROTOCOL
Episode 3: “The Soft Reset”
🗓️ Recorded: August 21st, 1999
“We were never on the schedule. We’re in the static.”
[INT. BASEMENT HQ – NIGHT]
The rain had stopped. Finally.
The hideout was still—except for the click of tape spools and the dim, green pulse of a CRT on standby. A storm-burned VHS labeled simply “NULL – DO NOT WATCH” sat on the desk. The team hadn’t played it. Yet.
They hadn’t asked Null how it got here.
[INT. SAME – LATER]
Zane adjusted the copper shielding around the room.
Mira lit a candle. Not for the ritual—just for warmth.
Null sat cross-legged, wrapped in a blanket, face unreadable.
MIRA: “We don’t have to do this.”
NULL: “We already did. This is just when we remember.”
They pressed play.
[ON SCREEN]
Static. Then flickers of childhood footage. Grainy home video.
A kid—Null, younger. Spinning in circles in a dark basement, humming something glitchy. On the wall: a chalk drawing of a door. In the corner: an unplugged modem… humming back.
[INT. BASEMENT HQ – NIGHT]
ZANE: “You’ve been… like this since then?”
Null didn’t answer directly.
NULL: “There was a sound. Not music. Not speech. It knew my name. It opened something. Inside me.”
MIRA: “You saw something?”
NULL: “No. I saw less. Like someone redacted part of the world and forgot to patch me over.”
The tape continued.
Now: Null again, years older. Eyes fully blacked out by VHS smear. Speaking in reverse. The audio was wrong—layers over layers.
Zane rewound.
The words sorted themselves.
NULL (ON TAPE): “I wasn’t supposed to be here. I was meant for the Dreaming. The file corrupted. The backup rebooted. I came through anyway.”
MIRA (quietly): “You’re not fully… Earthside, are you?”
NULL: “Not anymore.”
The tape stopped itself.
The candle went out.
The phone rang. Once.
Then again.
Then silence.
Zane stood up. Didn’t answer it. Unplugged it.
ZANE: “We don’t need to know more tonight.”
MIRA: “Agreed.”
NULL (smiling faintly): “Thank you.”
They didn’t talk about it again. But they left the tape on the shelf, next to Carol’s file. Labeled it simply:
“Echo Entity – Living. Do Not Archive.”
“Some ghosts are still deciding what they want to be.”
